INTERESTING NOTES: She was born in Binghamton to Buffalo-born parents, but they moved back to Buffalo not long after. By the time of the 1940 Census, Rita was living at 570 Adams St. in Buffalo with her parents & maternal grandparents, a residence that was in the HILBURGER family for multiple generations.

She was an only child and a standout student throughout her years in school. Her parents opened a delicatessen on Niagara Street in Buffalo called ROMANE’s, and the KANALLEY family didn’t live far away and sometimes stopped by. One of the KANALLEY kids, Ken, one year older than her, ended up becoming her future husband.

Rita‘s parents bought a cottage in Java Lake, Wyoming County, in the late 1950s, following a similar purchase by her Aunt Hilda and Uncle Bill TERRAY in 1955. Their cottages weren’t far apart and they spent many summers together at Java Lake for family gatherings for decades to come.

She loved family time, hosting & entertaining, playing cards, and was a devout Catholic. Christmas was one of her favorite holidays, and she had all kinds of decorations & dozens of cassette tapes with Christmas music. She also had a fondness for parakeets & had several over the years; she would teach them how to talk.
