INTERESTING NOTES: Both of his parents grew up in Canada, though his father was born in Cleveland technically. His father still grew up in Cobourg & his mother in Kingston. They met in Buffalo, NY in the late 1920s and married in 1930. Kenneth’s middle name Wallace was a family name, as his paternal grandmother was Mary Wallace.
He got in a bad car accident at 16 years old, went to the hospital & had his spleen removed. According to family members, he was lucky to make it through this alive.
At age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve, and 3 years later he joined the U.S. Marines, spending 15 months in Korea & some time in Japan. In his 5+ years of military service, he spent time at Parris Island, SC; Camp Lejeune, NC; Vieques, Puerto Rico; Camp Pendleton, CA; Pearl Harbor, HI; and Quantico, VA. He reached the rank of Staff Sgt.
He was employed at the Buffalo Pipe & Foundry Corp. for 23 years. He later worked as an electrician, a maintenance man at General Motors, and then as a steeplejack in between jobs with his father Wallace.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time in the outdoors. He had a great sense of humor, and those who were close to him said he could be a bit of a prankster. He cared deeply for his family, instilling traits of discipline & loyalty to his children which he learned from his time in the military.
Growing up, he loved playing ice hockey and he would play across the border in Fort Erie, Ontario alongside future Hockey Hall of Famer & longtime Chicago Black Hawk (NHL) defenseman Pierre Pilote (they were about the same age, only 5 months apart).
Shortly before he passed away, he predicted the Team USA men’s ice hockey team would pull off a monumental upset of the Soviet Union at the Olympics in Lake Placid. Two days later, they did exactly that, pulling off the “Miracle on Ice.”
