The Big Picture: My Dad grew up on Roesch Avenue in the city of Buffalo. This month I learned we’re descendants of the Roesch family.
After years of not being available in the United States, the archives of the Catholic Diocese of Regensburg in Bavaria are coming online this summer, one parish at a time.
I have ancestors in the Diocese of Regensburg through both my Dad and my Mom. Of the parishes online so far, I’ve been able to trace some of my Dad’s ancestors, and I’m waiting for more parishes to come.
And I already have my first interesting discovery: the ROESCH Connection.
My Dad grew up at 263 Roesch Ave. in the city of Buffalo. From 1930-1933, Charles E. ROESCH served as Mayor of Buffalo. And present day, his grandson Charlie ROESCH continues to operate a family business under the name of Charlie the Butcher, famous for its roast beef.
This month, with the new Regensburg records, I learned that my Dad is a ROESCH descendant (and me too!).
The connection is through his grandmother Margaret (HILBURGER) ROMANE who has the Regensburg diocese roots. Specifically it’s through her father’s side, the HILBURGERs.
Her 5th great-grandmother was Anna Margaretha ROESCH. It was exciting to find that maiden name on her marriage record, Oct. 22, 1714 in Glaubendorf. She was born in a nearby village called Gebenbach on Sept. 30, 1694 to Johannes ROESCH, an innkeeper and butcher(!), and Anna Maria FORSTER.
Here’s the lineage from Anna Margaretha to my great-grandma: Anna Margaretha ROESCH b. 1694 –> Georg Franz TRUTTNER b. 1732 –> Maria Eva TRUTTNER b. 1758 –> Maria Anna ZOLLITSCH b. 1788 –> Maria Anna MESSER b. 1824 –> John Baptist HILBURGER b. 1854 –> Edward HILBURGER b. 1880 –> Margaret HILBURGER b. 1905
I researched the Buffalo ROESCH family a bit more and learned that they were from Baden, while mine were from Bavaria. Baden and Bavaria do border each other, but if there’s a relationship, it’s very distant.
The ROESCH surname, also Rösch in German, means “lively, brave” and sometimes it is translated as “red.”
I’m thrilled to find this ROESCH connection. It’s one of the reasons I enjoy genealogy, learning maiden names of distant ancestors, compiling as many as I can.
There will sure to be more interesting discoveries as more Regensburg records go online.
