After years of inquiries, it’s a thrill to know that the Catholic Diocese of Regensburg is digitizing its records and soon they will be available online, most likely for free.
The tough part now is waiting. And there is no clear indication when the project will be complete.
I have 3 immigrant ancestors born in the diocese of Regensburg, and they were all Catholic: Tobias Hilburger, Anna Messer, and Margaretha Mandl. I have their baptism records and their parents, having written to the archives of Bistum Regensburg in the past, but I would love to have an opportunity to trace their ancestors further back and build the family tree.
A petition in the year 2020 got some momentum going, with 1,661 signers. It called for the Regensburg records to be digitized and join much of Germany with records online.
In 2021, Bistum Regensburg acknowledged that efforts to put records online was underway but it would take “years” to upload the full collection.
Matricula Online is the most likely landing spot for the Regensburg records. That’s where most Catholic digitized records are housed in Germany and nearby countries, and it’s completely free.
There’s just no indication when it will happen, only that “it is happening”.
There are rumblings that the first records could go online in early 2023, but nothing confirmed.
