I first learned of my KANALLEY family being DNA-connected to the KENNEALLY family of Askeaton, Co. Limerick years ago. Indeed, my immigrant ancestor’s death notice says he was from Co. Limerick, so it wasn’t a surprise, but it was interesting to follow that lead, which led to learning we still have relatives in Askeaton to present today.
One of the great things about taking a DNA test is the enduring value. It’s not one and done. You get new matches all the time. My family has a new match, and she has Askeaton KENNEALLY roots.
Out of respect for her privacy, initials only: the match is SM (though she uses her actual first and last name on the test). She appears to live in the UK and through her maternal side she has Irish roots.
Her maternal 2nd great-grandparents were Edmond MURPHY and Margaret KENEALLY. They married in Askeaton on 9 June 1888 (found their civil marriage record in the district of Rathkeale, Co. Limerick). They had a son Thomas MURPHY in 1889 who is this DNA match’s great-grandfather.
Margaret KENEALLY was born on 26 January 1868 in Askeaton. Her parents: Michael KENNELLY and Ellen HARTE. Bingo. I’ve seen these names before, as my family has DNA matches through another child of theirs, Cornelius ‘Con’ KENNELLY, born on 10 November 1874 in Askeaton. He married Susan PURCELL and had 3 sons John (Jackie), Michael, Patrick and Mary Anne KENNELLY.
This means we have another branch DNA-connected to my family, strengthening support for the KENNELLY/KENNEALLY connection (as suspected all along), and perhaps increasing the odds it’s as close a relationship as can be – perhaps my immigrant ancestor Thomas (born c.1820) who went to Canada was an uncle of the Michael above.
Micheal was born on 12 October 1839 in Askeaton to Cornelius KENNELLY and Margaret NESTOR, who married on 27 November 1834 at Askeaton Parish. A Thomas KENNELLY was the godfather of their son John, born in 1844, possibly my Thomas before he left for Canada around the time of the Great Famine (c.1849).
Another child of Cornelius & Margaret was Margaret KENNELLY, born 6 October 1836 in Askeaton. She married Maurice LANGAN and my family is matching scores of their descendants.
It all adds up to a very close relationship between Cornelius and my Thomas. If not brothers, they were first cousins, certainly. I still lean toward a first cousins relationship, with speculation that their fathers were Michael & John based on Irish naming patterns, but with another branch in the DNA mix, I think it increases the odds they could be brothers, or at least half-brothers.
This new match is matching up with my great-uncle for 29 cM across 2 segments, and his 1st cousin for 41 cM on 2 segments, and shared matches all indicate a Kennelly connection. Given Thomas was their great-grandfather, and Cornelius would have been her 4th-great-grandfather(!), that would make them 3rd cousins, 3x removed if they were brothers, and 4th cousins, 3x removed if 1st cousins. Either way, another clear link to Askeaton.

Further back, thanks to a Big-Y DNA test, I learned that my KENNELLYs are synonymous with the CONNEELYs, CONLEYs and CONNOLLYs of western Co. Galway, and the village Ballyconneely (Bally meaning ‘place of’ – so ‘place of Conneelys’) is connected to my family. Both Ballyconneely & Askeaton sit on the water, so no surprise there.
