A Silver Medal awarded at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, Source: Naval History & Heritage Command

William Lawrence ‘Laurie’ WALLACE is technically my 1st cousin, 4x removed, will show what that looks like below, and he won a Silver Medal with Team Canada at the 1924 Summer Olympics.

He was one of eight rowers awarded the medal after they lost to the United States in the final. Laurie WALLACE was an alum of the University of Toronto, and he also had a career in rugby football. His Olympedia page his more details here.

In December 2021, nearly 100 years after his appearance as an Olympian, his silver medal (along with others) was found as an estate was cleaned out in Canada, and someone contacted me about this after seeing him in my tree. It was donated to the Peterborough & District Sports Hall of Fame, its new home.

Here is how I’m related to Laurie WALLACE –

Common ancestors: Daniel WALLACE & Mary Jane TRACY
My 4th great-grandparents, Laurie’s grandparents

MY FAMILY’S BRANCH

Son: Andrew Martin WALLACE, born 1856 Ontario, married Catherine BULGER

Daughter: Mary Ann WALLACE, born 1878 Cobourg, Ontario, married James KANALLEY

Son: Wallace James KANALLEY, born 1902 Cleveland, Ohio, married Mildred McQUAID

Son: Kenneth Wallace KANALLEY, born 1932 Buffalo, NY, married Rita ROMANEmy grandparents

LAURIE WALLACE’S BRANCH

Son: Thomas Patrick Joseph WALLACE, born 1870 Ontario, married Margaret MILLER

Son: William Lawrence ‘Laurie‘ WALLACE, born 1901 Toronto, Ontario, married May SCOTTmy 1st cousin, 4 times removed

The above lineages are verified based on years of research that I personally conducted, using primarily Canadian church & census records in this case. My great-grandaunt Marlene (sister of Wallace KANALLEY) once told me she would visit WALLACE relatives in Keene, Ontario, where Laurie died in in 1967, so my family was well aware of this branch and yet I had never heard of the Olympic connection. It’s a sure thing though, as it all matches up. Over the years, I have been in contact with a few descendants of Thomas WALLACE, who moved to Toronto from Cobourg and was a school principal in Toronto. They had told me there were some great athletes in the family. Hopefully I can reconnect with some of them in light of this find.
