When my great-great-grandmother Magdalena (KLEIN) BEASER passed away in the spring of 1948, an interesting article appeared in the Buffalo Courier Express just a few weeks later, headlined Eight Share Estate of Mrs. Beaser.
I found the article by searching fultonsearch.org, a great archive of historical newspapers in New York State, for ‘357 Leroy,’ an address in the family & where Magdalena had lived.
From a family history standpoint, this was a great find – the article, published May 4, 1948, was rich with info. First, it acknowledged a 1936 will, which I may want to track down at some point. Magdalena’s husband Andrew BEASER passed away on July 28, 1935, so it’s no surprise she filed a will around that time.
The article also provides the names of her 8 surviving children at the time of her death, 5 daughters & 3 sons. Unlike a typical death notice, it provides their exact addresses.
If you look closely, you’ll see that 3 of the children – Eleanor, Frances and J. Dennis – all lived at 357 Leroy Ave. This was a multi-family home that I knew my grandma grew up in, and even my mother lived there for a short time when she was young. So it was a home in the family for decades.
Using the information in the newspaper clip above, I created a map showing where each of the 8 children lived. They were all pretty close geographically, with 5 of the 8 living within about a block of each other near Blessed Trinity Church. This matches up with info I have – they were a really close family & involved in that church.

My great-grandmother is Frances (BEASER) GRUNDTISCH, pictured in the middle, the youngest of the 8.
There were 5 other children, making 13 in all, who had passed away prior to 1948 so that is why they weren’t mentioned.

Moral of this story: Sometimes you’ll find something interesting just by searching for an address that you know your family lived at or was connected to. This was a nice find.
