When I started researching my family history, it didn’t take long before I learned about my great-grandma’s oldest sister Magdalena, affectionately called “Daisy” by family members.
This is the only known surviving picture of Daisy, in part because she had a tragic untimely death; the browning/yellowing, aging original was restored & colorized with MyHeritage & a touch of Photoshop.
Born Magdalena BEASER on Sept. 8, 1890 in Williamsville, Erie Co., New York, she was the oldest daughter of Andrew BEASER & Magdalena KLEIN. Her life came to a sudden end just shy of her 2nd birthday.
The article above describes some of the details in a July 1892 edition of The Illustrated Buffalo Express.
The streetcar itself was not a new concept in Buffalo. The system began all the way back in 1834, predating other American cities, per Skyrise Cities; at that time, it was a horse pulling the car.
But then a significant invention came along that preceded Daisy’s death. The electric streetcar, or trolley system, was invented in 1888 by Frank Sprague. In 1889, it debuted in the city of Buffalo around Delaware Park, and within a few years it was more widely rolled out.
The electric trolley line opened on Main Street on Christmas Eve 1890, and it was the line responsible for Daisy’s death. She was struck on a summer day, July 23, 1892, where Main & Amherst St. intersect.
The story gets more heartbreaking. According to my great-grandma Frances (BEASER) GRUNDTISCH, Daisy was running to greet her father Andrew near the butcher shop where he worked when she was struck.
I dug into all kinds of records to see if I could learn anything else. From Erie County Probate Records, I discovered that Andrew sued the Buffalo Crosstown Street Railway Co. for $5,000 after Daisy’s death. He ended up being awarded $1,250 in a settlement, which he split with his lawyers ($625 each).
Adjusted for inflation (2021 U.S. dollars), he sought about $150,000 and he got $36,000, which again he split with his lawyers ($18,000 each). I’m glad he got at least something for this tragedy, but it’s still heartbreaking, to bury a child, and hard to imagine putting a value on a child’s life like that. I’m sure that he & his wife would much rather have Daisy back, in an instant.
After Daisy’s death, Andrew got involved in the real estate business & he became a contractor, so he invested some of that money to provide for his family. He & his wife went on to have 7 more daughters and they had 3 sons who survived childhood, though the family experienced another tragic death in 1921 when one of the daughters died of Tuberculosis.
Several years later, after learning Daisy’s story, I learned what the “M” stood for in my great-grandma’s middle name. Some relatives assumed it was Mary, and they told me that was her middle name. But on her baptism record at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Buffalo, it was clear – it was Magdalena.
Daisy’s final resting place is Ss. Peter and Paul RC Cemetery in Williamsville.
