A popular trend these days in genealogy circles is to post a colorful depiction of geographic locations in your ancestry.
Dubbed #MyColorfulAncestry on social media, some are colored by state, others by county, and others by country, depending how diverse the places in your tree actually are.
The graphic above is my contribution, with each quadrant representing one of my grandparents. Colors are by country, and towns/villages are in smaller font, with counties used for Ireland.
This gives you a good idea of where most of my ancestry lies. White boxes indicate “unknown,” as some of these branches turn into brick walls or the records don’t go back far enough, especially the case in Ireland. Still, it’s an interesting look at the main locations of interest in my ongoing research.
You’ll notice that most of my branches that are visible here immigrated to North America not too many generations ago, nearly all in the 1800s. But I do have a few branches at the top of the circle in blue (U.S.), Canadian Loyalist lines that go back to Colonial British America, before the United States existed. This goes back to families who lived in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Virginia.
